regular playing cards were a chinese invention around 1375...the 52 card deck was in place at this time and spread to western europe...thhen go 250 years -- to get to the begginnigs of the  tarot --

the earliest surviving decks - hand painted sometimes inlaid with gold - were the the carey-yale visconti - 1445 yale university

the visconti-sforza - 1450 at the morgan 

theres is a dispute about which deck is the oldest by about 50 years...

the decks are pictorial representations of the italian visconts -- in the sforza family -- 

and both decks are incomplete -- there is also a deck some where in italian in a private collection...

the morgan museum - circa 1450 -- has two of these decks - on display -- accredited artist bonafacio bembo -
